So… What the heck are the three principles?
The three principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought are universal truths about where our experience comes from. They direct us from an outside in understanding of human experience to an inside out understanding. They have an will always exist but a new understanding of them and the phrase three principles was given to a man by the name of Sydney Banks in 1973.
Sydney Banks, a Scottish welder with a 9th grade education, was attending a marriage seminar held on Cortes Island, in British Columbia, Canada when in a conversation with a therapist also in attendance he was explaining to the man about all the reasons he was insecure. The therapist responded something along the line of “You’re not insecure Syd, you just think you are.” And all of a sudden Syd realized it was true. He wasn’t insecure he just THOUGHT he was.
That brief conversation brought about the insight that lead to Syd’s profound understanding of the Three Principles. After this brief encounter and insight Syd spent the remaining years of his life sharing his understanding of how the human system works with all who would listen.
Three Principles -What is a Principle?
Lets do a quick experiment. Pick up something close by you and drop it. If it’s breakable please only drop it a very short distance. What just happened? It fell. You’re thinking “no duh, Tim. I knew that would happen before it even did.” And you would be exactly right! What we just experienced was the principle of gravity in action.
And that is what a principle is. Something that is true no matter how we think about. I could insist that gravity doesn’t exit but I’m still gonna hit the ground if i jump off a building trying to fly.
A good foundation..
Let’s say you’re building a house. You always have to start with a foundation that is capable of supporting the walls and the ceilings. You want your house to last for years to come and if the foundation is faulty the entire structure will be faulty as well.
The same goes for us. If we live our lives with faulty principles or no principles at all we are trying to build on a shaky foundation. We will always struggle. There will be stress and anxiety and depression and bad relationships. But if we start off with the proper set of principles perhaps even THE Principles life is just easier for us. I am not saying it will be all rainbows and puppies because there will still be struggle and heartache and sadness. But We will handle these situations and emotions much better because we know how our system works.
It only makes good common sense to understand how something works before we dive head first into it. And that’s what a proper understanding of the three principles will provides for us..
An understanding of how we as humans work
When we fully understand the three principles and how we human beings tick then all the “bad” stuff –
Doesn’t look quite as scary. We see it as part of the system just as –
Are all apart of the system as well. So we are able to wake up from the outside in misconception and see that we live in the feeling of the principle of thought and not the feeling of our circumstances. We will talk more about this later. So hang on. But for now lets start with the three principles and begin with the principle of Mind.
The Three Principles
Universal Mind is the intelligence behind life. Its what is built in to the flowers so that they know to grow bloom and die. It keeps us breathing without us having to think about it. It tells the earth to spin around the sun. It is the innate creative intelligence in all things. Without it there would be nothing. It is not our small ego mind. Here is a quote from Sydney Banks that explains it better than I ever could.
“You know the eastern philosophers say: “big Mind, little mind”. And here’s the paradox. The little mind is the ego mind, that’s the self-centered “me” the big hotshot, the only thing in the world worth looking at in the mirror, is me. The big Mind is the Divine Mind-the Universal Mind, which is the intelligence of literally all things in this world or any other world. That’s the Mind you should be looking for. That’s the Mind that has the power to guide you through life, and if you can see that, life becomes simple and you’ll find your happiness. Cause happiness is inside, honestly…it’s inside.”Sydney Banks
The second principle of the three principles is the principle of consciousness. Consciousness makes us aware. Awareness helps us realize the existence of life. There are an unlimited amount of levels of consciousness. Sydney Banks Describes it like this in his book The Enlightened Gardener.
“The way I see it, levels of Consciousness are similar to an outside elevator on a tall building. It goes up and it goes down all day, every day. The higher the elevator car ascends, the more can be surveyed. Views that may be blocked from the fourth floor can easily be seen from the tenth. Similarly, the higher your level of consciousness, the more understanding will be in your heart. The higher the consciousness elevator ascends, the more you see and understand, allowing you access to more common sense and wisdom. That is, when your consciousness ascends to a higher level, it assists you to see beyond whatever misled thoughts were obscuring your vision yesterday. Now consider that if someone were trying to explain such a psychological elevator ride-say, to the twelfth floor-to a person who had never been above the second floor, the conversation would appear mystical for the simple reason that he would be talking about the as yet unknown.”Sydney Banks
Because we are pure consciousness pure awareness. Its the essence of our being. All that we truly are is awareness.
The principle of thought is the creative force behind all of our existence. It does not exist separately from Mind and consciousness but it seems that way.
100% of our experience of reality is through thought. Let’s put it another way.
We live in the experience of our thinking not the experience of our circumstances. With this knowledge of how the system works we are no longer controlled by what is going on around us. If we have the choice of how we react in every situation then we are free.
Someone may say something hurtful about us but when we know that our experience of that comes from our thoughts and not what they say we are free to think anything we would like about that situation and the beautiful thing is that we know it’s just thought and thought cant hurt us.
Thoughts ebb and flow just like the tides. Their comings and goings are natural all a part of the system.
Controlling our thoughts are impossible. The more we try to control what we are thinking the more we think random stupid shit. And that is ok because we do not have to control our thoughts we can just let them be and know that the natural ebb and flow of thought is all apart of the system.
As soon as we let go and realize “Oh well, it’s just a thought,” our natural psychological immune system kicks in and we return back to our innate equilibrium .
We live in the feeling of our thinking not the feeling of our circumstance.
moods are thoughts.
Feelings are thought.
Your hate is thought
Your ambition is thought.
We have ZERO outside experience apart from thought.
Your joy is thought.
A bad mood has nothing to do with the circumstances you think caused it. It is 100% a litmus test for your thinking at the time. Shitty mood… Shitty thoughts…
The solution to shitty thoughts, mood, feelings.
Noticing, that’s it. notice that your thoughts are shitty. Don’t try to fix them. Don’t try to substitute one thought with another. We go to awareness. The source of all things. As soon as we become aware, notice, the thinking our natural psychological immune system kicks in and returns us to our equilibrium.
“Remember-and this is very important-you’re only one thought away from happiness, you’re only one thought away from sadness. The secret lies in Thought. It’s the missing link that everybody in this world is looking for. We worry over nothing. How many times have you worried, and you look back in your life and say, “I don’t know why I ever worried about that,” or you’re in a big tantrum and you’re mad at the world or you’re mad at your spouse and three days later, you can’t remember why you were mad – because all it was was thought and you forgot what the thought was. The past is now, it’s history, it’s an illusion in time and if you’re going to work from that illusion in time, you’re going to keep it going, there’s no end to it. To forgive is to forget, so you have to forget the past to forgive. Once you do that, you’ll find your freedom. But again I’m going to say to you, you don’t just do that to other people. When you look in the mirror, you see an innocent person. And I know sometimes you might look in the mirror and say, “Innocent my foot.” Because you don’t like what you see. Why don’t you like what you see? Because of your thoughts, we’re back to that again. It’s always Thought, the missing link called Divine Thought. It’s a gift that we were given to have the freedom to walk through life and see what we want to see. How much better than that can you get? That you have the freedom to walk through life and see as a free thinker, that is the greatest gift ever, to be a free thinker. Now this doesn’t give you the permission to act on your thoughts because then again, you have the freedom to have a thought to put life into it or let it die. I might have the thought all of a sudden, “Ooh, I’d love to have more money, I’m going to rob this bank,” but if I don’t do anything about it, I haven’t done anybody any harm. It’s only when I put life into my thoughts. But if I have the thought, “I’d like to help those people,” so I put life into this thought, and the second this life goes into this thought, my actions start, and I go out and I help people because you put life into your thoughts. It’s all Thought.”– Sydney Banks
I’ll say it once more… We live in the feeling of our thinking not the feeling of our circumstances.
That’s the difference between the outside in model – Our circumstances control our moods, feelings, thoughts – FALSE
The inside out model – all we experience feel and think is just thought taking form in the moment.
And when we know it’s all just thought we are ok.
The three principles are not a code or creed to live ones life by they are an undeniable truth about how we a humans work. Just as gravity is an undeniable truth about how life on our planet works.
If we drop our cellphone its gonna hit the ground. It doesn’t matter if we believe in gravity or not it’s still gonna be there doing it’s gravity thing.
The same goes for the three principles
The principle of Mind is always going to be there as the innate intelligence of all things.
The principle of Consciousness is always going to be there allowing us to be aware of our thought in the moment.
And the principle of Thought is always going to be there. Its how we experience the world and others. It’s why we love and laugh and cry and hurt and fear and hate.
We live in the feeling of our thinking not the feeling of our circumstances.
